Canteloupe
Our journey starts in Immokalee, Florida, around the last week of March, where the first cantaloupes of the season are plucked. These early ones are usually a bit smaller, ranging from 180 to 200 count, with a few even larger at 120 count. Moving up to the Plant City area, the cantaloupes get bigger behind the strawberry plants, with sizes around 120 to 100 count. Planting in stages allows us to keep picking for the next month. Then it is on to Georgia or Alabama depending on weather and rainfall. We will jump to South Carolina by the end of June into early July. As the Fourth of July approaches, North Carolina is bustling with cantaloupe picking, signaling the peak of summer. For the coming month, we focus on shipping locally in the Carolinas. Wrapping up the summer season, we venture west to Kentucky and Indiana, making sure that you can enjoy delicious cantaloupes throughout the summer months.
Peaches
Are you craving the perfect summer treat? Look no further than the fresh and delicious peaches from Country Boy Produce in North and South Carolina! We kick off the peach season around mid-May with our cling peaches that come straight from the trees to handle baskets and then are loaded onto racks for market transport. Yes, our peaches still have that lovely fuzz on them, a sign of their tree-to-mouth freshness guaranteeing juicy ripe peaches every time. As the season progresses, our freestone varieties join the mix starting in early July and continuing throughout the summer until we wrap up around Labor Day with the best South Carolina peaches you can find. With such a sweet and fruitful selection, make sure to enjoy these delectable peaches while they’re in season!
Watermelon
Fresh watermelons are all the rage these days! It’s interesting how the preference for seedless watermelons is shifting, with chain stores focusing more on them while older customers still crave those big seeded ones. It’s like a little debate between the generations, but hey, variety is the spice of life! Over time, we’ve seen the younger crowd increasingly asking for seedless melons. Our watermelon crop kicks off around late April in Punta Gorda, ensuring that we’re ahead of the spring rains. As the season progresses, we make our way up to Georgia, South Carolina, and eventually North Carolina to keep the watermelon goodness flowing. It’s a journey from south to north, but we make sure everyone gets their sweet, juicy watermelon fix along the way.
Tomatoes
At Country Boy Produce, vine-ripe tomatoes are our specialty! Our tomato journey begins in the sunny fields of Punta Gorda, Florida around the first of January. With 4-5 plantings in the area, we ensure a steady supply from January to April. Transitioning to our partner farm in Ruskin, Florida, we continue harvesting from April to June. Heading further north to Quincy area in Florida and then to South Carolina, our dedicated team hand-picks and packs tomatoes from mid-June to mid-July. As summer progresses, we venture to the picturesque mountains of North Carolina where our small farmers diligently pick and pack vine-ripe tomatoes for us until the first frost in late September or early October. Our tomato adventure culminates with a return journey to north Florida and then back to the sunny fields of south Florida for the remainder of the year. Join us on this flavorful expedition through the bountiful tomato fields!
